The playground is a great place to create land art with the children. Not all schools have access to natural materials. Bring the materials into school to create land art in the playground. Lots of parks have materials such as fircones, sticks, stones, acorns and conkers when in season, fallen leaves. We collected these lovely fircones from the park and brought them into school, we are always on the lookout for amazing nature to use in land art.

We have been making stone faces, they are great fun to create. I am going to set myself a challenge of making a stone face family. The couple holding hands are George and Beatrice and the chap underneath is called Bill. More family to arrive very soon! Take the kids out to a rocky place and get them to create their family and friends!

This day I attempted the grass diamond I was suffering from a bad back!!

We went out collecting our natural materials for our sculptures, I'd had the idea for the grass diamond sculpture for a while.

After collecting dried grass stalks and fresh green stalks, I set about making the sculpture, using thorns to attach each ends.

It was extremely fiddly and getting all the right sizes was frustrating. The pain in my back wasn't helping at all. :-(

Eventually, and I'm probably talking a couple of hours, I asked Richard for help!! Which in my mind is a fail on my part.

But, Richard did a great job in finishing the sculpture for me. I chose where it should sit and Richard with his expert photography skills took the photo.

A good team effort, and although not all my own work it shows what you can achieve with a bit of help!juliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14931398999415835642noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4382705135475240063.post-24644687376727304392015-12-21T08:38:00.001-08:002015-12-21T08:38:47.607-08:00Recently, Richard was asked to write a blog piece for the WildlifeTrusts 'EveryChildWild' their aim is to encourage every child from small infant to young adult to want and to have every opportunity to explore nature and wildlife.

Here is their blog:
Richard has been updating his own website along with land art for kids, but these things do take a while when you are doing it yourself! Luckily Richard has these skills as well as land art and photography.

I will try and post as often as I can. I always try and post something on the land art for kids facebook page most days.

Here are some pictures of something I made in the summer, it is purely for the children to have a go at, and grown ups too of course! :-)

I collected some really lovely sticky mud, (kids love mud) the best mud around in these parts!!! Then I used the stems from Maple leaves, and the eyes are leaves made into circles, an acorn for the rabbits tail, voila, mud animals!!

My calendar for 2013 has finally arrived! 18 months ago a publisher asked me if they could put one together using my images, I was chuffed to bits and to now have one in my greasy mitts, well how cool!

Amber Lotus Publishing are a lovely fluffy company based in Portland, Oregan and they were an absolute pleasure to deal with, I had great fun sorting out the images for them and lots of excitement anticipating what it may look like. And finally it arrived the other day!

Larger than I thought, think of a vinyl album cover (though sadly it doesn't play a tune when you slap it onto a record player but it might ruin your stylus) and printed on dolphin/tuna/donkey sanctuary/hedgehog friendly paper. I can only imagine how many wonderful forests have been planted just to offset the printing of this calendar. I am expecting a massive kick back from the squirrels. They now owe me big time...

I have a few knocking around should you want one (that'll be you people with Paypal accounts and not any squirrels even if you have a PaySquirrel account), about £8 each give or take shipping and where you live in the world, drop me a line if you want one, there's a contact whatchamacallit on my website. You can get them on Amazon too should that mean you can get one cheaper wherever you are. They don't ship to squirrel land so take note nut munchers. You can get them plenty of other places too apparently but you'll probably know better than me about that.

Oh and finally should you want a book for Chrimble, Blurb are knocking £7 off until 13 December, just enter SAVE7 at checkout. If you squirrels want one then you'd better ask Blurb if it is alright to pay in hazelnuts.

We went out looking for Autumn leaves and a lot of them are to be described as moth eaten, but autumn is still starting so hopefully they will produce more colour perfection over the next few weeks.

The Boston Ivy leaves are growing against a side wall of a shop, they lose their brilliance quite quickly once they drop or are picked so need to be used straight away. The colours remind me of a wedding, whites and pinks, lovely. Hung from a tree capturing the afternoon sunlight they show their wonderful delicate colours.
juliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14931398999415835642noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4382705135475240063.post-17882298125600837392011-08-24T03:43:00.001-07:002011-08-24T03:43:00.425-07:00Mussel Shell Lined Square With View.

Mussel Shell Lined Square With View., a photo by JRT Pickle on Flickr.

Mussel Shells at the beach lined up in a square, there are so many different shells you can find on the beach. This part of the beach had so many razor shells I could have collected bucket loads, but obviously you need time and energy to collect lots and lots, so I collected as many as I could!!

I planned to lay them flat and make a pattern on the sand, the sun was shining and when I held the shell up to the sun they lit up brightly bringing out the lovely browns and white colours on the shell. I have not done any since doing the mud spiral and I looked forward to doing something. The weather is very warm for the time of year, summer seems to have arrived early and we will not complain!

I collected some red, green, yellow leaves and some lovely mud from the river bank, it is great mud, very thick and sticky perfect for land art. Mud varies a lot on where you get it, it can be dark black to a horrible brown and the stickiness of it also varies. I should write a list of different types of mud!

I used scissors to cut the leaves into little squares, sometimes you might need to use tools to make a sculpture, such as scissors, but don't worry if you do not have any, it is just as good to make a sculpture using found materials and making something into a shape such as a square, triangle, circle or a mixture of whatever you like. I found a very nice triangular bit of rock, created my mud square and then spent quite a few hours putting on the coloured leaves!

I like the end result, the red leaves after a few hours turned brown, I will go back to the sculpture later and see if it has changed even more.
Posted by JuliaRichard Shillinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13986006611907624065noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4382705135475240063.post-66417058602956623182011-04-11T05:55:00.000-07:002011-04-11T06:10:16.901-07:00http://www.flickr.com/photos/jrtpickle/5439430624/

This sculpture is very easy to do, especially if you are tall! Richard has been busy making sculptures from ice in the very cold spell we had in December and I will post a couple of those in the next few days or so.

Getting back to the present we had a great day doing land art in Tythe Barn Wood, a private wood that we are lucky to have access to, it is always very peaceful. I found a little acorn cup amongst the pile of brown leaves on the ground and it was the only one I could find. I collected some mud in our lunch box tub, added some water to make it more fluid then dipped the little acorn cup in the mud to make little mud circles as you can see. There are so many more things you can do with this type of land art, I am definitely going to give it a go and try more patterns etc, maybe make a leaf pattern using dried leaves and mud.

Julia :)Richard Shillinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13986006611907624065noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4382705135475240063.post-35291368195894756962010-10-10T10:16:00.001-07:002010-10-10T10:16:20.102-07:00101010 - Land Art Workshop - Giant Spiral
101010 - Land Art Workshop - Giant Spiral
Originally uploaded by escher...

101010 - Land Art Workshop - Giant Spiral

This is what I did on 10/10/10, ran a land art workshop with Julia for a group of kids and adults on behalf of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

We were tasked with helping create awareness of the beautiful places around here and the diverse flora and fauna.

The weather was great and we all had a fine old day making cool sculpures.

I'd be hard pressed to say whether the adults (I can't call them grown-ups) or the kids had more fun.

Once we'd finished this spiral it was so big it could be seen from space.
